School of Human and Social Sciences

Institute Description:
The School of Human and Social Sciences offers undergraduate and post-graduate degree, diploma and certificate programs. The primary focus of the School of Human and Social Sciences is to serve its students. This is evidenced by providing best learning experience for students, increase equality of educational opportunity for students, by removing geographical, financial, social and cultural barriers that traditionally limit access to higher education achievement. In many programs, students have the choice of studying through either a highly flexible individualized study method or a more traditional grouped study method. At the same time, this flexibility supports students in achieving their personal goals and managing other aspects of their lives. The school is uncompromising in its commitment to excellence in academic standards. History The University of Venda was established in 1982 with four faculties. In 1986 the number of faculties increased to five whereby the faculty of Arts became the new faculty. In 1987 the university moved away from the faculty system to schools systems. The faculty of Arts changed its name to the School of Human Sciences. In 2002 the School of Education and Human Sciences merged into a new school referred to as School of Human and Social Sciences. In 2008 the two schools changed the name to the Schools of Education and Human and Social Sciences. Vision To be the centre for the study of human conditions and their social life for rural and regional development in Southern Africa Mission The school will use appropriate methodologies to critically analyze, exchange ideas and knowledge to address the challenges and the needs of the disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences through learning, teaching, research and academic citizenship for rural and regional development in Southern Africa. Mandate Both Humanities and Social Sciences through their multiplicity of programmes, ranging from undergraduate to post graduate studies, focus on understanding, meaning, purpose and goals through interpretative methods of finding the truth and explaining the causality of events for rural and regional development Values The School of Human and Social Sciences identified the following as its values: ?
